History of Kandy Lake

Kandy Lake is a man-made lake. It was built in 1807 by King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe, the last king of the Kingdom of Kandy. Before the lake was created, the area was mainly paddy fields.

The king built the lake to add beauty to the royal city of Kandy. Today, it remains one of the city’s most important landmarks. The small island in the middle of the lake adds to its special charm and makes the view even more attractive.

A Peaceful Place in Kandy

The lake is surrounded by roads, trees, historic buildings, and mountain views. Visitors can enjoy a quiet walk around the lake, especially in the morning or evening. The cool breeze and peaceful atmosphere make it a perfect place to take a break from the busy city.

Many birds can also be seen near the water. The lake is a lovely place for nature lovers and photographers. At sunset, the lake reflects the sky and nearby lights, creating a beautiful view.

Near the Temple of the Tooth

One of the main reasons Kandy Lake is so special is its location beside the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. This temple is one of the most important Buddhist places in Sri Lanka.

Every year, Kandy becomes very lively during the Esala Perahera festival. The city is filled with traditional dancers, drummers, decorated elephants, and many visitors. Kandy Lake becomes part of the beautiful festival atmosphere.
